- Multi-head: Multiple heads, each with multiple needles. You can run 4, 6, or even 12 identical pieces simultaneously. This is the 'volume tool.'
The question isn't 'which is faster.' It's 'which is faster for your specific order.'

The obvious winner: Multi-head. If you need 100 identical polos, a multi-head machine will run circles around a flatbed every time. In March 2024, we ran a 1,200-piece order on our 12-head line. It took 6 hours. A flatbed would've taken days.

The multi-head trade-off: Every head needs to be set up for the same job. Want to run 5 different designs at once? You can't. You're stuck running one design across all heads until you stop and re-setup.
Real-world story: Last quarter, we lost a $4,000 contract because we tried to run a complex, multi-design order on our multi-head line. The setup took 2 hours. Flatbed would've taken 30 minutes. We missed the deadline.
The question isn't 'which is more complex.' It's 'how complex is your typical job?'

The question is: how tolerant are you to batch failures?
Choosing the Right Melco Machine (Real Advice)
Here's the thing I've learned after processing 200+ rush orders: there's no single right answer. But there are clear patterns.
- Choose the flatbed (EMT16X or similar) if: You do custom, one-off, or complex designs. You value flexibility over raw speed. Your shop handles 10-50 orders per day, not 100+.
- Choose the multi-head if: You do volume runs. Your typical order is 50+ identical items. You have the space and operator training for batch production.
- Choose both if: You can. Seriously, many successful shops run both. Flatbed for custom, multi-head for volume. It's not a zero-sum game.
One final thought: Don't let 'AI embroidery machine' hype distract you. The real advantage of a Melco machine—flatbed or multi-head—is the software ecosystem and the reliability. The 'AI' features help with design optimization, but they won't make up for the wrong machine for your workflow.
And no, you can't use standard sewing machine thread on an embroidery machine. Different weight, different tension. That's a whole other topic.
My advice: think about your last 10 orders. How many were single-piece? How many were batch? That'll tell you what you need.
